The first Korean poetry recitation contest was held by the Korean Department of Foreign Languages. It primarily aims to improve students' language competence and practical ability and deepen their understanding and cognition of Korean language and culture. The contest lasted for more than a month. With freshmen as the main body, it took the online evaluation mode, relying on practical courses. The contestants selected the poems one month in advance and conducted recitation training under the guidance of teachers. One week before the competition, the recorded audio and texts of poetry recitation would be submitted to the staff, who would anonymously send them to the judges. Based on emotional expression, pronunciation, and intonation, the judges would select ten contestants for the final. The contest would announce one first prize winner, two second prize winners, and three third prize winners. The list of winners and their entries are as follows: the first prize–Xie Yidan ( entry: Flower);the second prizes–Zhang Linghe (entry: The Night Counting the Stars),Cang Xingyu (entry: The Visitor); the third prizes–Zhang Kexin (entry: Autumn Letter), Yu Fan ( entry: The Sunset), Sun Anqi ( entry: The Poem on Porcelain of Tongguan Kiln).
The prize-giving ceremony was held in the first language lab of the Foreign Languages building on June 28, 2019. Professor Quan Helv, the deputy dean of the College of Foreign Languages at Jilin University, awarded the winners certificates.
After the ceremony, Jin Mingyan, a teacher at the Korean Department of Jilin University, made a concluding remark. She highly praised the students' positive attitudes toward learning and their excellent performances in the competition. She also pointed out that Korean pronunciation and intonation are still the focus of students' future learning.
This poetry recitation contest not only enriches students' extra activities and improves their language proficiency, but also provides them with opportunities to deeply contact and understand Korean culture.
